What is polished concrete?
There are two basic types of polished concrete, mechanical and topical.

Mechanical polished concrete is a process where your surface is ground and polished using specialized equipment to give the appearance of polished stone. The surface will be flattened and ground smooth to remove any course texture, ridges or bumps.

Additionally, the concrete is coated with densifyers and sealers which harden to protect and add additional shine to the surface. The mechanical process can be done in various levels depending on the application and use. The finished product can be a low sheen such as 200 or 400 grit polishes for industrial applications or up to 3,000 grit for decorative applications for residential or high end retail.

Topical Polished Concrete

Topical polished concrete is a process where concrete is sealed and polished using specialized densifyers and sealers to cover the surface of the polished concrete to give the appearance of smooth finish. The surface of the polished concrete will still have a course texture and any inconsistencies in the surface will remain visible. This process is inexpensive and does not last as long as a mechanical polish but provides a nice looking surface that will protect the integrity of the floor.

Benefits of Topical Polishing

The benefits of topical polishing are that it is inexpensive and it lasts one to two years and can be done in a matte to high gloss. Additionally it is good for new construction and makes cleaning of the floors easier.

Polished Concrete Applications

Polished concrete has a wide variety of applications and uses but it is the perfect application for Fire Station floors, Big Box retailers like Home Depot, Lowes and Menards, Airport Hangers, Commercial Garages, and Retail Commercial stores like Kohl’s or Kroger’s.

Benefits of Mechanical Polished Concrete:

It is a cost effective process compared to many other flooring options.
The re-polish costs are less expensive than the original process.
Last 3 to 5 years in high abuse industrial and warehouse applications
Last 5 to 7 years in mild to moderate use such as retail or residential.
Great application for rehab or new construction.
Provides an even, consistent and uniform look.
The dry process can be done without plant shut downs.

Meets Food/ASTM cleanliness.
Eliminates dusting and efflorescence and protects the concrete from spills and stains.
It is a better flooring option because many other coatings such as epoxy fail frequently.
Provides protection from constant abrasion, delamination, spalling and co-efficient of friction.
Provides improved reflectivity and ambient which will reduce the lighting bill.
Provides for increased slip resistance – although quite shiny polished concrete does not create a slippery floor. The benefits of mechanically grinding and flattening the floor will increase coefficient of friction than ordinary concrete.
